Heading off to college is a major milestone for students and their families across Dublin 7, Dublin 15, and Dublin 22. However, as CAO offers drop, high pressure around finding accommodation creates perfect conditions for fraudsters.
Recent warnings from An Garda Síochána highlight that over 230 rental scams have already been reported this year, with total losses topping €400,000. At Phoenix Credit Union, we want to make sure our members have the tools to spot these traps early.
Common Accommodation Scams to Watch Out For
- The Absent Landlord: A scammer demands an upfront deposit before allowing a physical viewing, claiming to be currently living abroad.
- The Mass Viewing: A fake agent shows a property to multiple students at once, collects deposits from everyone, and vanishes.
- The Key Failure: Everything seems legitimate until the keys do not open the door, or the property turns out to be occupied by someone else entirely.
Essential Checklist Before Paying a Deposit
- View in person: Physically visit the property and test the keys in the locks before handing over any money.
- Verify the identity: Ask for official photo ID and check that the property is registered with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB).
- Benchmark the rent: Compare asking prices against local RTB averages to spot unrealistically cheap offers.
- Check the photos: Run a reverse image search on listing photos to ensure they were not stolen from another site.
- Pay safely: Use secure banking methods like a credit card. Never transfer money to untraceable third parties, cryptocurrency accounts, or cash apps.
The Danger of Money Muling
Criminal networks also target students aged 18 to 24 through social media and fake job adverts, offering fast cash in exchange for using their bank accounts.
Transferring stolen funds on behalf of someone else is money laundering. Even if done unwittingly, it is a serious criminal offence carrying penalties of up to 14 years in prison, damaged credit ratings, and long-term impacts on future employment or travel visas.
Never share your online banking details or transfer money for an acquaintance you do not know and trust in person.
